A new scheme launched by the TN govt makes solar power more accessible

The Tamil Nadu government has launched a new solar energy policy which, among other things, moots generation-based incentives (GBI) especially targeting domestic consumers.

According to the scheme, a subsidy of Rs. 2 per unit will be given for the first two years; Re. 1 per unit for the next two years and 50 paise per unit for the following two years. This has been made applicable for all solar or solar-wind hybrid rooftop installations that are set up before 31 March 2014.

The scheme will be administered by the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (Teda) and the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco). According to the scheme, it will cost a domestic consumer about Rs.2 lakh to set up a 1 KW solar powered plant, in which the central subsidy will be Rs.81,000.
